By Dave Pearson
On a lovely sunny Easter Saturday, Redcar unexpectedly reached the semi final of the Yorkshire Silver Trophy without kicking a ball in anger.
Redcar kicked off and were hit within 30 seconds with a try from Wetherby, 0 – 7. Then 3 mins later another, 0 – 14 and on 11mins yet another, 0 – 19. This looked as though it was going to be a rout, The well drilled and organised Wetherby lads meant business and they continued to dominate and on 21 mins they scored their 4th try to take the score to Redcar 0 Wetherby 26. Redcar then seemed to regroup and won some possession and the game became more of a contest.
Redcar led by Captain Marvellous Brad Stovell who was everywhere, put in some good interplay forwards and backs and veteran Paul Evans, playing on the wing, stormed in, to score in the corner, 5 – 26. Just before halftime the Wetherby prop No.1 was yellow carded for foul play.
Half Time Redcar 5 Wetherby 26.
As Wetherby restarted the game they once again ran in a couple of unconverted tries, 5 – 36. Redcar had reshuffled the team at halftime and substitute Steve Johnson scored after some sustained pressure on the Wetherby try line, the try was converted by Brad Stovell, 12 – 36. As the game drew to a close, flanker come centre James Cochrane, was yellow carded for retaliation, but the game was all but done.
If the first 21 mins could have been discounted the remaining 59 mins were won by Redcar 12 -10. Redcar has had a very hard and challenging season, in this semi-final game they had one last hurrah, they thought it was all over, well it is now.
