Redcar Hold Off Ryton’s Comeback

By

Ryton staged a second-half revival but Redcar’s determination saw them home to a well earned victory.

Redcar kicked off with the wind advantage and it only took 2nd row Drew Reader 2 mins to take the visitors completely by surprise, when he ran from just outside Redcar’s 22 to score, fending off haphazard defenders in his way, 5 – 0. Redcar looked like they meant business and continued to take the game to Ryton and were unlucky when and attacking move broke down, and a pass was intercepted by a Ryton player, who ran under the posts to score, 5 – 7.
On 12 mins Redcar looked like they had regained the lead when centre Matty Curry doggedly wove his way through the Ryton defence and went in under the posts, but he was adjudged to have knocked on in the act of scoring, but 2 mins later Redcar did take the lead through winger Craig Newlands when he scored in the corner, 10 – 7. Redcar kept the pressure on and on 17 mins the Ryton No.8 got a yellow card. Fullback Danny Addison further extended Redcar’s lead with a try on 30 mins, 15 – 7, but 2 mins later was shown the yellow card for a blatant trip on a Ryton player.

Half Time Redcar 15 Ryton 7.

The game resumed and on 45 mins Danny Addison returned from the bin and scored his second try, 20 – 7. Redcar were looking comfortable and flyhalf Jake Duddles increased the score with a well taken try, 25 – 7. As the game went on and Redcar tired, Ryton now with a very strong wind advantage pressed the home side and scored two tries in quick succession on 52 and 55 mins both converted, 25 – 21.
Redcar now went into panic mode and gave away possession too easily by kicking to Ryton’s backs, but Craig Newlands eased the situation and steadied the ship with another try and Danny Addison converted it, 32 – 21.
Ryton continued to attack, still hoping to win and on the 73 min they scored yet another converted try, 32 – 28. With only 5 mins to go, Redcar substitute Mark Harrison was yellow carded and Ryton threw everything at Redcar, but the defence held out for a well deserved victory.

Final Score Redcar 32 Ryton 28.
