Redcar travelled away to Houghton as the rain scythed down, so much so that their pitch was waterlogged, so the game had to be switched to a nearby ground. (I couldn’t find it and missed the KO). Houghton kicked off and the rain changed to just a drizzle. Redcar were soon out of the blocks and scored after only 5 mins from a forward drive 2nd row Drew Reader and Neil Young crashed over, Drew Reader claiming the try, 0 – 5. Redcar’s backs were causing Houghton problems and centre Matty Curry made a clean break and scored Redcar’s 2nd try after 12 mins, it was converted by Danny Addison, 0 – 12. Redcar had most of the loose play and tested Houghton’s defence, which was pretty good, but eventually on 30 mins Josh Dixon and the backs created an opportunity and the space for Drew Reader to canter in for his second try which Danny Addison converted, 0 – 19.

Redcar restarted the game and continued to attack Houghton, on 46 mins winger Craig Newlands, who was always causing problems for the home side every time he got the ball, raced in leaving the Houghton defence in his wake, 0 – 24. Redcar had been giving too many penalties away at the breakdown then winging at the ref, he marched them back on several occasions. Houghton made inroads into the Redcar 22 and from one such attack, when the ruck had been formed, No.8 James Cochrane was deemed to have deliberately stopped the ball emerging and was given a yellow card for his trouble, Houghton kicked to the corner won the lineout and drove over, 5 – 24.
The game then was evenly balanced for the next 20 mins or so until, on 70 mins winger Gabe Homes produced the best try of the game when he scampered in from 30 metres, turning the defence one way then the other before scoring under the posts, Danny Addison added the extras, to bring the final score to 5 – 31.
