Redcar travelled to Ryton with a very young and inexperienced squad, which bore little resemblance to last season’s team, which was relegated after finishing bottom of their league. Only seven of last season’s players were available, due to retirements, players moving to other clubs and some still on holiday.
Redcar looked dangerous in the first 20 mins, but couldn’t convert their attacking play into points, Ryton were streetwise and stopped Redcar’s momentum and were lucky not to concede a yellow card after 5 penalties in the red zone. Ryton scored two tries that came from Redcar’s mistakes before Redcar scored a try from Danny Addison, Redcar’s flyhalf and most experienced player and Danny also kicked two penalties. Ryton’s overall strength and experience overpowered Redcar and they ran out 54 – 11 winners.
Danny Addison was awarded Redcar’s Man of the match but there were notable performances from 17 year old winger Gabe Holmes and wing-forward Phil Taylor. Overall, credit must go to new player coach Matty Curry and all his squad, this was a very tough away fixture, to kick off the season.
Things, as they say, can only get better.
