REDCAR TRAVEL TO BARNEY WITH XVI… (report from Liam Rogers)
Redcar travelled to promotion chasing Barnard Castle with 16 players, only replacement being Jason Nicholas, his first game of the season.
Understrength, Redcar were under pressure from the kick-off and managed to hold BC out until 11th minute, when Barnard Castle scored their first try following a breakdown infringement, a quick tap from the penalty and the home side No. 6 scoring his first try of the afternoon, easily converted. 7-0.
The home-side soon doubled their advantage, from another Redcar penalty, and another quick tap, some slick handling enabled the home-side No.7 to dot down, conversion missed. 12-0.
From the KO, Redcar conceded their third try of the game. Some slack defense meant BC could play front-foot rugby, and their off-loading once in behind the Redcar defense was accurate. 19-0.
Redcar finally managed to get some hand-on-ball after 25-min, and scored their first and only try of the game, after building 10+ phases, winger Craig Newlands, soon to be Father, dotted down in the corner, conversion missed. 19-5.
As HT approached, multiple infringements lead to BC penalties, which in turn lead to a catch and drive from the lineout. Two tries in the space of 4 minutes resulted in a HT score of 31-5, quite flattering.
From the KO, Redcar were soon again under pressure, and BC scored try No. 6 following some slick handling and passive defense. 38-5.
This was the script for the next 13 minutes, when BC scored a further 3 tries, 2 of which were converted, to lead 57-5.
As Redcar, and the referee, tired, play went from end-to-end, with both sides exchanging some blows. And after a further 13-minutes, Barney scored two unanswered tries, one of which was converted, taking the score-line to 69-5.
The final whistle came earlier than expected, on the back of some handbags from both sides. Referee, Paul Candlish, was not tolerating any of that and decided to call time on what had been an expected tough outing for Redcar.
Redcar would like to thank BC for their hospitality in making 16 x players, 1 x coach and 1 x supporter feel welcome. Good Luck for the remainder of the season in D&N 1 and best wishes in the promotion campaign.
