Redcar Show Spirit But Well Beaten By Consett
A bit of a David and Goliath contest but this time Goliath won.
Redcar kicked off and the conditions were ideal for open rugby, with little wind to bother either side, but their task against one of the league title contenders was made all the harder when losing second row Neil Young to the bin, with a yellow card after only 10 mins, for off side at the scrum in front of the posts. From the ensuing penalty Consett showed they were full of confidence and opted for a scrum in front of the posts this did not go their way, as they broke from the back of the scrum Redcar’s scrum half Brad Stovell hounded their scrum half and the ball went loose and was won by No.7 Dominic Ayre and the danger cleared.
Five mins later from a Redcar scrum, Redcar were driven back, but still managed to take the ball and set up an attack almost to the half way line, when the ball was passed across the backs, full back Richie Young was tackled and Consett rucked over him, won the ball and a clever kick through from No.18 allowed the No.10 to run round and score, which was converted from wide out, 0 – 7.
Consett got their second try on 25 mins, 0 – 12. From the restart, Consett fielded the ball and put in a clearing kick, which was taken by Redcar winger Danny Addison, who chipped over the oncoming Consett players, it was caught by Richie Young, who fed it to centre Josh Dixon who out stripped the Consett defence to score a great try, 5 – 12. Consett’s third try came from a defensive error from Redcar, as did their forth when a tackled man was allowed to wriggle away and recollect the ball and run in under the posts unhindered, 5 – 26.
Redcar had the last word in the first half with a try from Richie Young, from a lineout win from his brother Neil and a good break from winger Matty Curry, then interplay from the backs and then the forwards took it on and got close to the line, the ball came out open again and Richie scored near the posts this was converted by Danny Addison.
