Guisborough Suffer A Pre-Xmas Hangover
Redcar were at home to local rivals and they came out of the blocks with all guns blazing.
Guisborough kicked off on a grey, dull and chilly day at Mackinlay Park, the wind was blowing across the pitch towards the stand, so there was little advantage to either side, but it was Redcar who got off to a flying start and fullback Danny Addison slotted a penalty after only 4 mins, 3 – 0.
Redcar showed they meant business at ran the ball wide at every opportunity at a sluggish Guisborough team and it paid off when on 10 mins winger Craig Newlands scored in the corner and Danny Addison converted it with a great kick from the touchline, 10 – 0. Five mins later Craig got his second when Josh Dixon, Danny Addison and Craig linked up to create another good try, 15 – 0. They almost repeated it again on 22 mins but Craig was tackled just short of the line, but prop Chris Clitheroe was backing up and bulldozed over and scored, 20 – 0.
As the half drew to a close Guisborough rallied a bit and started to play more like they were expected to and were rewarded with a try from a quickly taken tap penalty by their scrum half, who made the try for the supporting hooker, 20 – 7.
Half Time Redcar 20 Guisborough 7.
The game restarted and Danny Addison quickly extended Redcar’s lead with another penalty, 23 – 7. Then the game swung Guisboroughs way as they seemed to shake off their hangover, they had most of the attacking possession and on 55 mins scored a 2nd try from a lineout drive and a pick and dive over, this was also converted, 23 – 14. From then on it was a case of Guisborough trying to open the game up and Redcar keeping it tight and neither side managing to alter the scoreboard, the only other thing of note was, as the game was in the final few minutes Redcar’s second row Neil Young was yellow carded but with only 2 or 3 mins left, it had no effect on the outcome.
Final Score Redcar 23 Guisborough 14.
