Redcar’s Sunny Start Soon Turned Into a Grey Away Day
In a must win game Redcar’s chances faded as their confidence dwindled and Gosforth’s soared.
Redcar kicked off against a fairly stiff wind and looked lively as they went to move the ball wide in the early stages, some good runs from Matty Curry and Danny Addison looked promising, but it took 24 mins before some good interplay between forwards and backs led to a break from hooker Phil Dyball and he passed to 2nd row Steve Johnson to score and Danny Addison converted, 0 – 7. The rest of the half belonged to Gosforth as they ran in 3 converted tries on 30, 35, and 37 minutes.
Half Time Gosforth 21 Redcar 7
As the game resumed Redcar now had the wind behind them and once again they started well with new signing Nathan Williams scoring a try on his debut, which Danny Addison converted, 21 -14. Danny followed this up on 48 mins with a well taken penalty, 21 – 17. Redcar had two further penalty chances on 52 and 55 mins but could not add to the score, then on 68 mins Gosforth killed the game off, from a Redcar scrum in front of their own posts, Redcar were penalised for not releasing and Gorforth’s quick thinking fly half, took a quick tap and dived over the line, 26 – 17. Redcar had one more chance on 75 mins to get a consolation losing bonus point with a penalty kick but it was not to be and Redcar’s hopes faded like the fading light.
